Spreckels Organ Society, a non-profit organization curating concerts and performances at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in the heart of Balboa Park, presents several special holiday concerts with the Spreckels Organ – the largest open air musical instrument in the world – as the centerpiece.

On Sunday, Dec. 14 at 1:30 p.m., the Society will host a Holiday Celebration & Annual Holiday Sing-Along!

  • Educational Workshop: At 1:30 p.m., Raul Prieto Ramírez, San Diego’s Civic Organist and the Society’s Artistic Director, will invite kids and families to join him on-stage to build a little mechanic pipe organ, assisted by docents. While the kits are being built on stage, Ramírez will perform some fun holiday music for the audience. Once the little pipe organs are set and ready to play, Ramírez will have the kids play together with the Spreckels Organ.

  • Concert & Annual Sing-Along: Following the educational workshop, at approximately 2:15 p.m., Ramírez will play a few magnificent pieces by great composers, serving as an interlude before the audience is invited on stage (approximately 2:45 p.m.) to participate in the annual sing-along of Christmas carols and popular holiday songs. “Hallelujah” by G.F.Haendel will be sung by the entire audience, while performed on the Spreckels Organ by Ramírez; this serves as the golden closure for the annual Holiday Celebration Event.

During December Nights, Dec. 5 & 6, the Spreckels Organ will be featured in two concerts.

  • On Friday, Dec. 5 at 4:00 p.m., the Organ Pavilion Rock Band “Organ-ism” will present a program of Classic Rock favorites, then…

  • On Saturday, Dec. 6 at 2:40 p.m., Ramírez will perform holiday and all-time favorites.

Additionally, and kicking off the holiday season, Sunday, Nov. 30 at 2:00 p.m., the Spreckels Organ Pavilion will host the San Diego Youth Ballet as they perform a selection from Tchaikovski’s
“The Nutcracker”
with Ramírez, performing on the Spreckels pipe organ.

Set in the beautiful backdrop of Balboa Park’s open-air venue, performances bring a one-of-a-kind experience for guests. The elevated music venue brings world-class musical artists for San Diegans and visitors to enjoy, for free.

The Spreckels Organ Society hosts weekly concerts every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Through the generosity of the City of San Diego, the weekly Spreckels Organ Society concerts at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion are presented at no charge in accordance with the 1915 Deed of Gift whereby the brothers John and Adolph Spreckels gave the organ and pavilion to the City of San Diego.
