ProduceGood, a San Diego-based nonprofit dedicated to reducing food waste and alleviating hunger, is looking for growers with backyard citrus trees – one tree to dozens or more.
ProduceGood asks La Mesa residents to sign up to Donate Food, and allow volunteers on-site to glean the excess citrus, which will then be delivered and donated to local East County neighbors in need.
“The good nutrition that comes from eating your excess improves childhood development and reduces chronic disease; one orange provides all the Vitamin C a child needs for the day,” said Alexandra White, executive director and co-founder of ProduceGood.
“We’re asking the La Mesa community to help be a part of the food recovery solution. Does your club or church want to become a gleaning group? We would love to have you,” adds White.
Since its founding in 2014, ProduceGood has recovered nearly 7 million servings of fresh produce, redirecting surplus fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste to our neighbors who need them most.
Hunger is rising again across San Diego County, while funding cuts make it harder than ever for individuals and families to access fresh, healthy food. At a time when 26% of San Diegans are nutrition insecure, ProduceGood is aiding this movement, but they can’t do it alone.
