This guided tour will inspire all to watch and listen for various birds that rest in – and fly across – the salt marsh and mudflats. No matter the season, you can enjoy, photograph, and identify a host of native plants. Our Nature Center Loop Trail is accessible, providing fun for all.

Wildlife Tour: Ages 15+ (Registration Required)

During the summer, the San Elijo landscape may not appear as vibrant as other periods, leading many to perceive the visible flora as lifeless. However, these plants are alive and serve as crucial habitats for numerous animal species. These habitats are home to resilient and adaptable species that have evolved to withstand harsh conditions, such as intense sunlight and water scarcity. It’s truly remarkable to consider the diversity and adaptations of these species. Join us for this hike along one of San Elijo’s coolest summertime trails to learn more. The event is weather permitting, and wildlife is unpredictable; there is no guarantee of what you will see.

As summer days shorten, the earliest winter birds arrive. Keen observers may witness small flocks of Phalaropes swimming in dizzy circles in our quiet ponds. As we walk through vibrant fields of yellow goldenbush, we may spot a colorful Argiope spider patiently waiting in the center of her neat, tidy web or an emerald-colored green lynx spider, hidden against the foliage, waiting to ambush a passing bee. Hit the trails with us and enjoy the wonder of nature’s seasonal transition! The event is weather permitting, and wildlife is unpredictable; there is no guarantee of what you will see.
