Nature Collective is hosting four free events in March, including a Discovery Tour on Saturday, March 1, a Family Fun Day, March 2, a Wildlife Tour on Saturday, March 8, and a Volunteer Restoration Event on Saturday, March 15.

Nature Collective is a local conservation and science education nonprofit organization. They work to restore habitats, provide healthier waters, and increase wildlife diversity. They are dedicated to conserving the land and providing experiences for people to fall in love with nature.

Discover the beauty of San Elijo Lagoon: where fresh water and saltwater meet and mix, migratory and resident birds share a sanctuary, and many animals find a home. This guided tour will inspire all to watch and listen for various birds that rest in – and fly across – the salt marsh and mudflats. No matter the season, you can enjoy, photograph, and identify a host of native plants. The Nature Center Loop Trail is accessible, providing fun for all.

Sunday, March 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Family Fun Day: All (best-suited for children aged 9-years and younger) – Accessible Trail – Registration Required

Discover amazing bird nests of all shapes and sizes, learn who builds them, and how they’re made. Plus, create and take home a free craft! We’ll also share cool tips on how you can help protect Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) like the San Elijo Lagoon. Don’t miss out!

Saturday, March 8 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Wildlife Tour: Adults – Accessible Trail – Registration Required

Early spring is a time of change as our winter birds depart on their long migrations north to their nesting grounds, and the wildflower fashion show begins. Say goodbye to aerial acrobatics of our winter flocks of shorebirds, as we welcome the purple haze of wild heliotrope, the cheerful orange flags of wind poppy and the snow-white splash of popcorn flower – like a popcorn machine gone wild! We’ll keep an eye out for Climbing milkweed and Nuttall’s lotus too! The event is weather permitting. Wildlife is unpredictable; there is no guarantee of what you will see.

Saturday, March 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Volunteer Restoration Event: Family Friendly, Ages 6+ (minors with guardians) – Accessible Trail – Registration Required
Location to be shared before the event

Join one of Nature Collective’s many habitat restoration projects. Help is needed to restore precious habitats within San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve and the surrounding areas. From removing invasive plants to helping grow native plants indigenous to the area, you can help nature thrive, which benefits wildlife and our communities.
