Nature Collective is hosting several free tours and volunteer events in the New Year (see below), including additional volunteer events throughout the month in honor of National Day of Service. Observed each year on the third Monday in January, also Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the federal holiday is designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and improve their communities.
Nature Collective is a local conservation and science education nonprofit organization. They work to restore habitats, provide healthier waters, and increase wildlife diversity. They are dedicated to conserving the land and providing experiences for people to fall in love with nature.
This month’s events kicked off with a Discovery Tour (Jan. 4) and a Volunteer Restoration event (Jan. 8), and continue with:
Wildlife Tour: Saturday, Jan. 11 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
San Elijo Lagoon (meet-up location will be emailed to registered participants)
Adults; Accessible Trail; Registration Required
RSVP: https://naturecollective.org/event/wildlife-tour-january-11-2025/
Weather permitting. Wildlife is unpredictable. There is no guarantee of what you will see.
San Elijo offers an extravaganza of birds of more than 300 species; many are seasonal visitors that have left icy northern latitudes to over-winter in our food-filled estuary. There are divers and dabblers and stalkers and little peeps that scurry across the mud. We may spot rare visitors, such as a Little Blue Heron or a Eurasian Wigeon. Recent rain may lead us on a treasure hunt for mushrooms, such as the charming earthstar, the medicinal turkey tail, and the thought-provoking dead man’s foot.
