Coastal Roots Farm, a nonprofit community farm and education center inspired by Jewish values, received a $100,000 grant from the Prebys Foundation, the largest independent private foundation in San Diego County. The grant will fund the Farm’s environmental education programs including scholarship for youth attending Nature Play and After School on the Farm.
Nature Play invites children children ages 0-10 and their caregivers to participate in open-ended exploration and educator-led programming including garden exploration, “chicken chat,” storytime, and more.
After School on the Farm is for children ages 4-10 and gives “farmers-in-training” the opportunity to spend time outdoors doing hands-on activities at the farm. These activities include planting, weeding, watering and tasting organic fruits and vegetables, learning about how plants grow, exploring the farm and caring for chickens.
The grant includes scholarship funding to ensure nobody attending these programs is turned away for inability to pay. The grant comes as part of the Prebys Foundation’s newly announced initiative, “Healing Through the Arts and Nature,” which aims to enhance the well-being and quality of life of San Diegans in a post-pandemic climate.
“Through programs like ‘Nature Play’ and ‘After School on the Farm,’ we’re empowering children to connect with nature, learn the importance of sustainability and build connections with friends, and it’s all possible thanks to donations like this,” said Javier Guerrero, CEO and President of Coastal Roots Farm.
