Coastal Roots Farm — a nonprofit, organic community farm and education center inspired by Jewish values in Encinitas — hosts its annual summer Farm Film & Music Series, designed to bring community together around shared values to protect people and our planet.
The series’ third film and outdoor event will take place on Thursday, July 18 and will host the premiere of Women’s Work: The Untold Story of America’s Female Farmers documentary. This compelling film shines a light on the often-overlooked contributions of women in agriculture, offering a timely and uniquely matrilineal perspective on America’s farming history.

Through a rich tapestry of stories and locations, ‘Women’s Work’ celebrates the achievements of both historical and contemporary female farmers. The film features insightful interviews with farmers, rural experts, and historians showcasing the diverse backgrounds, locations and agricultural practices of women across the nation.

“Women farmers have long been erased from the agriculture narrative, despite their many contributions,” said Audra Mulkern, executive producer. “In ‘Women’s Work,’ we aim to show how women have carved out their place in an industry that has historically marginalized them. We hope this film sparks a conversation about recognizing and valuing the vital role women farmers play.”

The Farm invites families, friends, and the entire community to join them on the Farm for inspiring documentary films, local musicians, and meaningful conversations around equitable food systems, environmental justice, and caring for the planet.

Gates open at 6:30 p.m. (for this film), and before the film, there will be live music, mingling and a chance to speak with local organizations and individuals from the community. Guests are encouraged to bring their own picnic blankets, lawn chairs, food, and drinks to enjoy an evening on the Farm.

Additional Farm Film & Music Series dates include August 22 (gates open at 6:00 p.m.) and September 19 (gates open at 5:00 p.m.).
